Father knife - Reforged legacy

I decided to change the name to something that fits the asset better. Originally, it was called “Father’s Knife” because the main reference was literally a knife my dad bought when he was in the army. I always thought it was the coolest knife, mostly because of the handle design. It also helped having it right there on my desk for reference while sculpting and texturing.
If the apocalypse ever hit, this is the knife I’d hang onto. And if it broke, I’d definitely try to fix it. That’s actually the mindset I had while making this asset-thinking about how I might repair it if I had to. Not very well, apparently. Those welds are far from clean.
I wish I could make more renders, it is hard to decide which one to pick

Disclaimer: I didn't make the background wood texture that is in some of the renders. I read on discords that it is okay to use scanned texture for background only.

I dont know if the render with stats is considered as extra to those 3 beaty renders, or If its supposed to be one of them since it was optional. If it was supposed to be one of the 3, dont judge this one please and judge the other 3 renders.

Posting additional references I gathered while working on the asset before posting final submission.
I got inspired by common tools that lay in every shed, like shears, hand saw, screws a cogs. They made a great addition to my reforged blade

Textures are done! Now I just need to render the knife properly-but that's turning out to be a bit tricky with the 3 render limit

Textures part one

Finally the fun part begins! Leather parts are almost done, they just need little bit of polish. For now I will move on fabric and metal parts in case I wonť have enough time and leave it to the end.

Retopology + test bake

I finished retopology by combination of topogun and blender. I did uvs in Rizom and fast bake in marmoset to know if everything works. I'm quite happy how the cloth strands turned out, I was little worried that they will be blured, but fortunatelly I have enough texel density for the alpha mask.
But they still need to be rebaked, some strands baked on more planes in places where they nearly overlap.

Retopology - topogun

I took a break from sculpting and done some retopology in topogun on the parts I'm done sculpting on.
I didn't put details on the parts that will be covered by the fabric to save some polygons.

Sculpting part 2

I redisigned the blade to fit the theme, It still needs sculpting pass, it is more of a block out now. I decided to combine part of big gardening scissors with broken part of hand saw. Welded it together and added some screws to make sure it doesnt fall apart
Somehow the silluete turned out to look little bit like a gun

I didnt have much time lately, but I finally got back to sculpting. I refined the fabric and added few details here and there and I'm feeling like the retopology will be nightmare 😁

Blocking out part 2

I started blocking out the sheat for the knife
, it will be central part of my asset and I want to give it enough attention. I simulated some fabric in marvelous designer for more story telling, but it still needs some refinement. It will probably hold razers

I started blocking out the dagger. The blade will be broken and welded/replaced with something else. Now is just for size reference.
I hope I didn't make any welders mad for my welding abilities 😁

Concept phase
Thinking about this challenge led me to wonder-if an apocalypse actually happened, what kind of weapon would I be able to create? More importantly, what would I want to keep and refine over time? I know I'd hold onto something with sentimental value, like a knife passed down from my father. But what if it broke? How would I repair it? Would I incorporate other relics of the past, maybe even a lucky charm, to make it truly my own?

I'm starting to gather some references and making a concept out of them. I thought lucky rabbit foot would be cool, especialy after I found out how it looks when you keep it for too long. But it seems like it doesnt fit there. I will have to think of something better.
