Ugh... Some personal stuff came up and I don't have enough time now. What a shame. I guess I also bit more than I could chew (I mean it's first time for me modelling from my own (though primitive) concept, plus it involved a lot of sculpting which I mostly avoided in the past, not to mention a ton of complex and new to me materials like ivory, carved wood, leather wrappings, etc) and grew more unfocused and unproductive by the end. Well, better luck to me next time I guess. If I will participate in a similar challenge in the future I'm doing a model of a nail to make sure I finish it. I've started doing blockout but then I realized it would be better if I had a proper M4's receiver model to base it of something. So I've spent two days modeling it in Plasticity. First time using it for an actual project. Powerful tool but I have to figure out how to get a proper topology out of it.
Anyways, Here's the receiver and some VERY primitive blockout around it.

Here's some progress on the tribal carbine (I guess it's going to be called so instead of 'tribal M4'). I'm no concept artist by any means, but I tried. Made a couple of different variants combining the receiver of AR15 (because it has a longer barrel unlike M4) with parts from all the rifles from native American, Africans and Arabs until I landed on something that I was more or less satisfied with.
Now it's time to make a rough blockout and further refine the concept from other angles.
Hope I'll be able to pull this thing out - it promises a lot of challenges that I've never did before.

So, after ruminating about what should I do for the challenge, I have landed on an idea inspired by Fallout's various tribes and Canticle for Leibovitz book: an 'old' world artifact, misunderstood, misinterpreted and elevated to divine status. In my case - M4 rifle. Let's say the world has fallen apart pretty bad and a couple hundreds years later most people live in tribes and have very vague idea of how the world used to be and how things worked. One day they uncover a number of M4s preserved in barrels with oil (that's usually how they are stored in long term storage) along with a bit of ammo. Having no concept of firearms or how to use them properly they instead associate it with rain as the sound of a shot reminds them of thunder.
Generations later only one rifle remains and it is used by tribe's shaman to summon the rain. By this time the rifle is like Theseus's ship made mostly out of parts of other rifles while plastic parts has completely crumbled. The buttstock, handle and the handguard are replaced with parts made of available materials: wood, ivory; adorning rain themed carvings and the whole rifle is covered with them, as well as various trinkets, wrappings and other 'old' world artifacts meant to help in rain calling.
Well, that's enough of fanfiction. Now is time to get to work.
I have already gathered some references. I've been looking specifically for native american/african weapons, both firearms and cold weapons, as they all have a distinctive way of decorating their weaponry, using leather wrappings, beads, carvings and trinkets as well as etchings on metal. Now it's time to photobash some rough ideas of how it could look like.
