French Musical Automaton (c. 1890) – Danil Shevchenko

Update #139m ago

For this challenge, I chose to recreate the French Musical Automaton (c. 1890) — a French musical automaton from the late 19th century.

When I was choosing a subject, I wanted to create something less obvious than a weapon, a piece of furniture, or a musical instrument. Since my main focus is character art, this automaton immediately caught my attention. It combines an interesting human figure with lots of decorative details, which made it a perfect choice for this project.

The challenge limitations — up to 25,000 triangles and a single 2048×2048 texture set — definitely make things more difficult, but that's also what makes it exciting. I'll have to squeeze as much quality as possible out of those limitations.

I think the most challenging parts will be the dress ornaments, the flowers, and the hair. But that's actually a good thing, because these are the kinds of details where I can really show the level of craftsmanship and attention that goes into the model.

And one more challenge — I could only find a single reference image online. On top of that, the photo quality isn't great, so many of the ornaments and smaller details are barely visible. On one hand, that makes the project more difficult, but on the other, it gives me a bit more freedom for my own artistic interpretation.

Well, it's time to get started. I'll be sharing my progress along the way, and hopefully I'll be able to see this project through to the very end.
