I pushed through the last few days to get some render to show off. I wish I had more time to make some props and better lighting/post processing. But with the limited time I had to work on this project around school I am quite happy with the result. This project made me get out of my comfort zone and try out a lot of new techniques.
In the last week I have worked on my composition, refined my snow shader and made a tree.
The snow is using absolute world position to blend the ground and snowpiles together better, as well as dithering on the snowpile meshes. I made specks on the roughness channel to make them "glitter" as well as blending in random colors on the normal map. Lastly I used subsurface to make it look softer and brighten the shadows.
Then I made my bark materials in designer for my tree and in blender created my branch and needles. I baked them together in designer and assembled the tree in speed tree. I struggled with making the tree seem soft and have the needles facing both outwards and up, but managed in the end. I vertex painted the tree in unreal and will add the alpha planes of a peeling bark effect I made for the tree closest to the camera.
Here are the collection of the HP meshes I have made so far for the modular house pieces and the wood items I combined them to. I have worked on a few different things the past week like ground materials and snow but will make a new post detailing that more when I sculpted some snow piles.
I definitely like most others overscoped this project and overestimated how much time I would have to work on this around school. The current plan is to in the last week make the last details for the wood assets like rope/hinges/nails and knobs. Sculpt some snow piles and smaller rocks and make one spruce tree and work on the composition.
After getting pretty sick post wisdom tooth surgery I have not been able to work on this project for quite a bit now. I will still do my best to have something to present in the end of the challenge but will continue working on it afterwards to better fit the vision I had in the start.
I sculpted a few more planks and have started assembling the modular kit for the house. Still have quite a few more parts left to sculpt to get the base of the house complete. I started playing around with a wood smart material to texture everything quicker. I was not sure what roof material I wanted so I made a straw alpha and layered it to test how a straw roof would look. I ended up liking how it breaks up the house from all the wood so I will continue working on it.
In the next two weeks I hope to finish the base modular kit, a few props, some vegetation and some terrain materials
Last week I started sculpting my background cliffs. I wanted them done early since it is my first time actually trying to sculpt rocks/cliffs. It felt like good idea to start with what I am most uncomfortable with. Due to time constraints I am not super happy with the sculpts end result but it is good enough for this project.
I then went on to make my master material for the rocks. I used a rgb mask for different details. Then I blended moss/snow on top, I generated a mask by combining the baked normal map with a detail normal map, and taking the world-space Z component of that normal.
I was very inspired by god of war especially kratos house for my wood/modular house pieces. I want the viking houses to feel very rustic and homemade. I have currently sculpted 2 planks of varying size. I hope to make one more to then construct the modular wall with them. I thought it would be cool to not have the planks tile but instead the ends of the planks being visible next to each column, as in my mind that is how a viking house would be constructed.
I felt very inspired to try making an ice material so I decided to make my viking village in winter by a frozen lake.
I started by blocking out my modular house pieces and played around with what kinda houses I can create from them and made a first iteration ice material.
